Actions Have Consequences

While I have no intention of getting political or debating the latest behavior of athletes, the president, congress, or anyone else, I just want to point out one thing.

Actions Have Consequences!

Recently, I read the headline of an article (being sick of the topic I couldn't stomach reading the actual article) A local high school football player who took a knee during the National Anthem was shocked by the response of the community. I thought, "Really? You're surprised by this?" While I have no idea whether the response was positive or negative all I could think was, all actions have consequences.

When did people stop realizing that EVERYTHING we say, do, or don't do has a consequence?

In my humble opinion, I think we stopped realizing that there are consequences when we started using texting and social media to communicate instead of talking to and meeting people face to face.

Whatever the reason, let's all remember that our actions do have consequences, both positive and negative and think twice before we say or do something we will regret at a later date.

Thank you.

What's New?

As mentioned in previous blog posts, we are getting out of the accessory business and diving head first into the basket business. Our pine needle coiled baskets, ornaments, and suncatchers have been so well received that we are having difficulty keeping up with demand. My fingers can sew just so fast! Because of the demand something had to "give" and that became the accessories.

This is great news for you! All of our remaining accessories are listed on our Facebook page - www.facebook.com/cruisincreations12 and all of these accessories have been reduced to unheard of prices!

WOW! Think of the savings for your holiday gift giving! Choose from cowl scarves at $5.00, winter scarves at $10.00, and necklets at $4.00 and $5.00.

To order, simply click the Shop button on the left side of our Facebook page, scroll through the items listed, and make your selections. Your items will be shipped within a day or two.

Upcoming Events

Santa Snacks and Cruisin' Creations will have displays at the Shaker Heritage Society Christmas Craft Fair again this year. It is there that you can pick up Santa's delicious gourmet seasoned pretzels and Cruisin' Creations pine needle coiled baskets, ornaments, and suncatchers.

The Shaker Heritage Society is located at 25 Meeting House Rd, Albany, NY. The craft fair runs from October 28 through December 16. The fair is open Monday - Saturday from 10:00 am - 4:00 pm. Reinventing Ourselves

Every few years we have to reinvent ourselves. No, we don't change completely, we simply find a new craft that is exciting to make and gets our creative juices going again. That is where Cruisin' Creations is at the moment.

Our fashion accessories had run their course. Over the past two years I've noticed customers excitement over our designs dwindling so I thought it was time to offer something new. At the same time I took a class in pine needle basket coiling. After making a few baskets and finding that my friends and neighbors were interested in buying them I realized that I had found that new offering. These baskets have been so well received at craft shows as well as on Etsy that I find myself in constant basket making mode. What could be more fun!?

Pine needle coiling fits well into my love of creating with a needle and thread. After washing the pine needles and baking them in glycerin and water I choose a basket base and sew the pine needles to the base. The basket builds and shapes with each row that is sewn together.

As you can imagine, this has been a transitional year for Cruisin' Creations. Along with changing to a very different product we are working on a new show schedule, discounted inventory, destashing unnecessary supplies, and new displays. While it may sound like a lot of work, I find fun and energizing.

Watch our Etsy and Facebook pages for new baskets and other pine needle decor.

A Craft Fair, Not a Flea Market

The craft show season is in full swing so I thought I'd share some thoughts on these events.

Participants at a craft fair are generally artists who design and create each item that they sell. They work very hard and generally find it difficult to charge a living wage for their work. They do this work for the enjoyment of it and generally live very frugally.

Crafters and artists create each item on its own. None are mass produced. And, while crafters and artists may be able to purchase some supplies at a wholesale price these supplies are generally far more than what a manufacturer, who is purchasing in very large quantities, will pay. Crafters and artists costs can be very high while their profit margins are very low.

So, when a customer visits an artist's display and asks the artist if they will accept a lower price, the artist finds this exchange disheartening and insulting. It is disheartening because they have put their heart and soul into each piece, and it is insulting because crafters and artists have difficulty selling their wares at a price that would provide them with a living wage.

How do I know this? I am one of those artists who has had customers offer a lower price for one of my designs. I already work for pennies so when a customer offers a lower price I decide that it would be better to not sell that item than reward the customer. Perhaps they don't realize how much time and effort goes into making an item? Perhaps they don't have enough money to pay the full price? Perhaps they just want to get something for less? I don't know the reason, but I do know that a craft fair is not a flea market where people dicker on price.

Why do I sell my creations if I don't make much money at it? Creating is in my blood and fortunately, at this stage in my life, I do not need this income to survive. This income provides me with a few extras as well as spending money to buy more supplies to create more items that I can sell.

Allow me to further illustrate by breaking down the cost of one of Cruisin' Creations trinket baskets.
Each trinket basket measures approximately 3.5 inches in diameter and is 3/4 inch tall.

Each trinket basket takes up to 6 hours to create. Let's break it down...

It takes up to 2 hours to cover and fill the plastic ring that is used for the center of the basket. The time difference is dependent on the thread that I am using. A variegated thread has to be applied in a manner that is much slower but results in a very pretty design when it is finished. The solid threads take a little less time because I can use an easier, faster method.

It takes 2-4 more hours to actually sew together and shape the basket.

The 4-6 hour timing does not factor in the time and gas it takes to go to the store to purchase the plastic rings and polyurethane, the time and costs to order the thread, glycerin, and pine needles, the time to wash, bake and dry the pine needles, the time to seal the basket, the cost of packaging, nor any other overhead costs that may be incurred. Another cost to take into account is the cost of the event. These average $90.00 and the event cost per item is determined after the fact when it is divided by the number of items sold.

The price for a trinket basket? $20.00 While I won't depress you or me by doing the math for this item, I'm sure you get the idea.

Why don't I charge more? People will not pay more for these items. I price at what the market will bear.

Artists designs are intellectual property. Taking photos of these items so they can be passed on to someone who also does crafts or so that it can made by yourself is stealing from the artist. Obviously, this is wrong on so many levels.

Many craft fairs are admitting direct sellers such as Mary Kay, 31, Tupperware, etc. to fill space and increase the earnings of their fundraiser. It is difficult for a skilled artist to compete with these vendors. The items they sell are mass produced and while they may still be more expensive than we will find at our favorite store or on our favorite website, we would never ask those sellers to reduce their prices. We understand that their prices are set. Discounts are only provided if the parent company authorizes those discounts.

Crafters and artists do understand that customers have different needs and different amounts of discretionary income. If the price is more than you would like to spend then please compliment the artist on their work and move on rather than offend them by offering a lesser amount. Another solution for paying a lower price would be to ask the artist to create something smaller, and simpler that would be more affordable.

Crafters and artists create for the love of creating. And while they love their craft they do have to support themselves on the money they make. To offer a person less is telling these skilled artists that their time and talent are not worth that of a person flipping burgers at a local fast food restaurant. Really? Why not?

FAQ - What Are These Made Of?

One of the first things customers do when they approach our booth is touch our scarves. They are always curious about the softness of each accessory and how it will feel against their skin. Their first question is, "What are these made of?"

Our necklets, eyeglass chains, waterfall scarves, and other lighter weight accessories are made out of 100% nylon thread. We generally use a 3 ply thread which better handles the size and weight of the beads. A few of our colors are only available in a 2 ply which limits the styles for which we can use them. There is a wide variety of colors available.
https://www.etsy.com/shop/cruisincreations?section_id=11483027

Our heavier weight scarves are made out of an acrylic based yarn. Some have a metallic thread running through them as well as other synthetic fibers. Again, there are a variety of colors available. If you don't see one that you like, simply ask. We love custom orders!

https://www.etsy.com/listing/202345156/hunter-green-shawl-scarf-knitted-shawl?ref=shop_home_active_1

All styles are hand washable and are very soft against your skin. The wide loops also make each design very lightweight and comfortable to wear for a day at the office or date night.

People also pick up our pine needle baskets and comment on how firm and sturdy they are. Baking the needles, using long leaf pine needles, firm stitches and wide coils to hold them together, and sealing each basket with polyurethane all help to create a sturdy basket which will be useful for years to come.

We use the same nylon thread that is used for our accessories to accent and hold the pine needles together in our baskets. View a new shipment of pine needles in the photo below.

FAQ - Do These Bracelets Stretch Out?

Your bracelet was made on a loom using a 2 or 3 ply nylon thread. While the loops tend to stretch a bit there is not a lot of stretchiness to the bracelet itself. It is for this reason that bracelet sizing is important.

Because the bracelet does not have any clasps it simply slides on and off your hand and is supposed to hug your wrist. It should be snug as it slides over your hand.

After frequently taking your bracelets on and off you may find that your bracelet is larger than was originally purchased. When this happens simply put a bit of soap in the palm of your hand. Add a bit of water and scrub your bracelet in your hand. Rinse in cold water then scrunch in a ball to dry. This will refresh your bracelet.

Once your bracelet is dry it is advised that you put a drop of clear drying glue on the knot behind the connecting bead. Frequent washing can deterioriate the glue that holds the knot in place.

Swimming or bathing while wearing your bracelet is not recommended as your bracelet will stretch out and may fall off. If you do forget to remove your bracelet before entering the water, simply scrunch it in a ball to dry then apply that drop of glue once it has dried.

Easy to care for and fun to wear! Your bracelets should give you many years of enjoyment!

FAQ - Doesn't The White Necklace Get Dirty?

In response to the many questions asked at craft shows and via email we thought it would be a good idea to address these questions in a blog. This way you will have a resource to refer to when needed. We will deal with a different question in the next few blog posts.

Does the white necklace get dirty? I don't think I want to buy a necklace that is so light in color.

Anything that rests against the skin for any length of time is going to pick up the oils in your skin. Yes, your gold, silver, knits, and fabrics in your wardrobe are all affected from resting against your skin. Some of these items are washed frequently so the potential discoloration never occurs while others tend to dull with wear. A simple cleaning brings all accessories back to their original color and shimmer.

All of Cruisin' Creations fashion accessories are hand washable. Simply use a little hand soap, dish soap, or clothes detergent and cold water. Lightly scrub the item with a small amount of soap then rinse in cold water. Reshape your accessory and let it dry. I like to use a sweater dryer for quick drying; however, laying the items on a counter top, bed, or any other clean surface also works.

There is an exception with bracelets. Yes, they are hand washable, but the drying process is slightly different. Again, use soap and wash in cold water. I like to put a little hand soap in the center of my palm, wet the bracelet and scrub it. Rinse in cold water then scrunch in a ball to dry.

After your accessories are dry we recommend putting a drop of clear drying glue on the knots. These knots can be found at the connecting bead of the bracelet, the tips of the tassesl on a waterfall scarf as well as the knot holding the tassels in place, where the chain, clasps, eyeglass elastics, or double split rings are attached, as well as where the seam connects both ends of a scarf. Frequent washing weakens the knots which can then come apart. That bit of glue will keep them in place and keep your accessories in good wearing condition for years to come.

Cleaning your Cruisin' Creations is quick and easy and the best way to preserve them while keeping them fresh.

The Road To Success (Author Unknown)

The Road to Success is not straight.
There is a curve called failure,
A loop called confusion,
Speed bumps called friends,
Caution lights called family,
And you will have flats called jobs.

But...if you have a spare called determination,
An engine called perseverance,
Insurance called faith,
And a driver called Jesus,
You will make it to a place called success!

This poem struck me when I came across it the other day while sorting through some papers. I found it to be an excellent reminder of the fact that no one becomes successful without failure. Failure is necessary to appreciate success. Failure keeps us humble too. And without our faith in and prayers to Jesus Christ, we will find it more difficult to reach that place called success.

Now that we are one month into the new year it only seems fitting to remind ourselves of how much we depend on Jesus to get us through the tough times and rejoice in the happy times. No matter how you worship it seems to be a natural reaction to turn to Him when we are facing adversity. We need Him in our lives, always!

Thanking Jesus for the blessings He brings to us each and every day helps us appreciate the successes in our lives even more.

If you're struggling with those new year's resolutions, perhaps a prayer or two will help.

What are your thoughts on this topic? Agree? Disagree? Please share your thoughts.

New Pine Needle Baskets

You know that saying, "Give a man a fish and he eats for a day, teach a man to fish and he eats for a lifetime?" Well, here's a spin on that saying, "Give Diane a needle and thread and she will create for a lifetime." And, she is creating as fast as her little fingers will let her!

This talent for needle and thread gives you a unique selection of useful and decorative baskets to choose from without having to make them yourself. And, they make the perfect gift for both men and women. The baskets pictured below are made with one of a kind pottery and wood bases. It's not too early to start thinking about your Cinco de Mayo party. This basket would certainly add the right amount of festivity!
